SUMMARY:Residential Writing Retreat with Janet Gover
DESCRIPTION:The End is just the beginning: finishing your novel and finding your readers. \nRetreats for You – Tuesday July 9th – Sat July 11\, Retreats for You \, Devon. \nThis course is aimed at new writers who have finished (or almost finished) a book and want to get it out into the world and at published writers who wish to give their writing career a lift\, or take it in a new direction. \nSubmit work for appraisal and each attendee will have one to one time with Janet\, to help you find the heart of your story and prepare it for readers. \nPlus there’ll be plenty of writing time\, and a chance to talk about books and writing with the only other people who truly understand – other writers. \nTuesday: Arrive 2 pm\, in time for afternoon tea. After meeting everyone\, there’s time to settle in before the welcome dinner  and a getting to know each other chat  around the fire. \nWednesday: Morning Session: 9:30-11:00:  Finding the best words – that final polish. Using themes and imagery. \nAfternoon Session: 2:00-3:30:  The first 100 words sell this book. The last 100 words sell the next book. These are the last words you’ll write – then STOP. \nOutside the sessions\, work on your novel or spend one to one time with Janet. \nEvening discussion of all things writerly – let Janet know if you have specific topics you want to talk about. \nThursday:  Morning Session: 9.30-11:00:  Working with an editor – the dreaded revision letter and publisher edits. When to change the book and when to say no. \nAfternoon Session: 2:00-3:30:  Working with agents and publishers. What to expect from them and what they will expect from you. \nEvening discussion of all things writerly. \nFriday: Morning Session: 9:30-11:00:  Finding readers – publicity\, social media and personal appearances. \nAfternoon Session: 9:30-11:00:  Staring the difficult 2nd (or 3rd or 10th ) novel. Handling rejection\, success and deadlines. Writing as a job rather than just for enjoyment. \nEvening discussion of all things writerly. \nSaturday:  Depart late morning\, and follow-up with Janet as appropriate.

SUMMARY:Developing Your Novel - the first of two linked workshops
DESCRIPTION:In association with Fiction and Fairy Lights Bookshop\, we present two workshops\, with tutors Alison May and Janet Gover. \nDeveloping Your Novel – 20th February 10am-4pm \nThis workshop is aimed at writers at any stage of their career. Whether you have a full draft that needs reworking or the very beginning of an idea\, this workshop is for you. We’ll look at the essentials of the novel – plot\, characterisation and setting. Then follow up with our Slush Pile Day. \nSlush Pile Day – 10th April 10am-6pm \nThe perfect next step\, this day is aimed at writers ready to submit their novel to agents or traditional publishers. We’ll help you create and polish your submission pack\, looking at query letters\, synopsis writing and honing a killer opening\, as well as looking at how to pitch your novel. \nThen your opening words will go to our expert panel for instant feedback. Skip the slushpile and hear what industry professionals think of your work.  All attendees will have the chance to submit their first 500 words for industry feedback. This must be original work\, created without the use of generative AI. Submissions will be read to both the group and the industry panel\, who will give immediate feedback. All readings will be anonymous. (Attendees will receive details on how to submit closer to the date.) \nBook the workshop that suits you\, or book both workshops together\, and receive a discount \nThe workshops fees: \nDeveloping Your Novel only £65 \nSlush Pile Day only £125 \nBoth days booked together £170 \nTo book your place go to –  https://forms.gle/vubbo3WYqBFwjFcd6 \nWorkshop Location: \nBoth workshops will be held at Fiction and Fairy Lights\, 6 Market Street\, Hednesford\, Staffs WS12 1AF   https://fictionandfairylights.co.uk/ \nThere is a train station a five minute walk from the shop with a line from Birmingham. \nAbout Your tutors: \nAlison May is a novelist and short story writer and a former Chair of the Romantic Novelists’ Association. She writes romantic comedies as Ally Sinclair and most recently as Amelia Berry. Alison has been shortlisted in both the Love Stories and Romantic Novel of the Year awards. Along with Janet Gover\, Alison also writes reinterpretations of misunderstood classic novels\, under the penname Juliet Bell. Her most recent release\, Stirring Up a Love Story came out in spring 2026\, and she is currently working on her first crime novel. \nAlison is also qualified teacher with a degree in Creative Writing and\, as well as working one to one with developing novelists\, has taught for Writing West Midlands\, the National Writing Centre and the Open University. Past students and mentoring clients have gone on to achieve agent representation\, publication with traditional publishers – including Avon\, Boldwood\, Bookouture\, Fourth Estate\, Headline\, Head of Zeus and HQ – and to self-publish successfully. \nJanet Gover worked as television journalist\, first in Australia\, where she grew up\, and then in Asia and Europe. As a journalist\, she discovered that most interesting people are often the ‘ordinary’ people – who sometimes have quite extraordinary stories to tell. \nHer first fiction was published in 2002. Since then she’s written 19 books and won writing awards in the UK\, USA and Australia. \nJanet co-ordinated the Romantic Novelists Association’s New Writers Scheme for several years and has taught at universities and writers conferences.
